What is the difference between SMD LED and DIP LED

2021-07-22

What is SMD LED?

SMD LED is LED(Light Emitting Diode) mounted on printed circiut board(PCB) with Surface Mounted Technology.

This type of LED can be in small pacakges to fit various designs and lower the cost of manufacturing.

SMD LED features

SMD LED helps engineers to design their PCB layout more easily due to diversity sizes of SMD LED.

Smaller SMD LED for didfferent and dedicate designs.

Increase denstiy of LED placed on one PCB

SMD LED can be mounted on both top or back of PCB

Lower cost compared to DIP type LED

Help to increase manufacturing automation

Less holes needed to be drilled

What is the difference between SMD LED and DIP LED?

DIP (Dual In-line Package) type LED with two rows of pins (inter lead spacing is 1 inch, 2.54mm),

Layout can be restricted by DIP LED's package size.

SMD LED, on the other hand, have many size choices ranges from 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, also 2835, 3528, 4040, 5050.

And  it can also be mounted on the back of PCB and cost saving for increasing manufacturing automation.

In addition, if the application is for better light performance, high power SMD LED is also very suitable.

SMD LED applications

SMD LED can be used in various applications.

From industrial application: panel lights, switch lights, signal lights. to appliance application: power lights, light sensors

Also outdoor and indoor signages, automotive application: head lights, interior decorative lights and so on.

Moreover, general lighting application like down light, spot light etc.

What tpye of SMD LED we provide?

PCB Type SMD LED, dice attached on PCB

widely used in many applications, thanks to its small size, it can be designed as signal lighting.

PLCC Type SMD LED, compact and also high reliability, applications on automotive and general lighting.

Lead Frame Type SMD LED, variable choices of lead shapes to fit different spacing need.
