VT 5J77 Overview

VT 5J77 is a 5 mm through-hole bi-color LED lamp from Victory Electronics (威力光電), Taiwan, with green and red dice in one body, a common-cathode configuration and leads on a 2.54 mm (0.1 inch) pitch, so it drops straight into standard perfboard and header spacing. A common-anode version is also available.

The lens is milky rather than water-clear. That diffusion costs some on-axis intensity — 45 mcd typical green and 71 mcd typical red at 20 mA — but it mixes the two dice into one even-looking dot and hides the individual chips, which is what you want on a front panel that a person looks straight at. The viewing angle is 60°.

Design Notes for VT 5J77

• Common cathode as standard, with a common-anode version available — tell us which you need when you enquire, because the two are not interchangeable on the board.
• A milky lens looks dimmer on a meter than a clear one at the same current, but far more uniform to the eye. If the part is behind a bezel or read from an angle, this is the version to specify.
• Green and red both run at 2.0 V typical (2.4 V max), so one resistor value works for either channel: roughly 65 Ω from a 3.3 V rail or 150 Ω from 5 V for about 20 mA. The two colors will still not match in perceived brightness at equal current.
• Maximum continuous forward current is 25 mA per die.
