VS 12D8 Overview

VS 12D8 is a blue 0402 surface-mount LED from Victory Electronics (威力光電), Taiwan, measuring 1.0 × 0.5 × 0.45 mm on the outline drawing. It emits at 470 nm through a clear lens, 28 mcd minimum and 55 mcd typical at 20 mA, with a 120° viewing angle.

The one number to read carefully is the forward voltage: 3.5 V typical, 3.8 V maximum. Blue and true-green dice use a different material system from red, orange and yellow, and that shows up directly in the drive circuit. A 3.3 V rail does not have the headroom to run this part through a plain series resistor, which catches people out when they swap a red indicator for a blue one on an existing board.

Design Notes for VS 12D8

• V_F is 3.5 V typical. Driving VS 12D8 from a 3.3 V rail needs a boost stage or a constant-current driver — a resistor alone will leave it dim or dark.
• If you are replacing a red or yellow LED in an existing design with blue, recheck both the rail voltage and the resistor value. The footprint is identical; the electrical requirement is not.
• A 3.3 V rail cannot drive this part through a plain series resistor (V_F is 3.5 V typical); use a 5 V rail or a constant-current driver. From a 5.0 V rail, about 75 Ω in series gives roughly 20 mA at the typical V_F; at the 3.8 V maximum the same resistor gives about 16 mA.
• Maximum continuous forward current is 25 mA; peak forward current is 100 mA under 1/10 duty at 1 kHz.

Can VS 12D8 run from a 3.3 V supply?
