VM 151CG Overview
VM 151CG is a 0.7 inch 5 × 7 dot matrix LED display from Victory Electronics (威力光電), Taiwan, with a column-cathode connection circuit and 12 pins. The 5 × 7 grid is the classic character cell — enough resolution for the full ASCII set, small enough to tile into a multi-character display without a controller board.
The emitters are 573 nm standard green with a 1.9 mm dot size, 30 mcd typical per dot at 2.0 V and 20 mA, on a grey surface. The grey face is doing real work here: it absorbs ambient light between the dots so unlit pixels stay dark, which is what gives the display its contrast in a lit room. A white or light-colored face would wash out.
Design Notes for VM 151CG
- Column cathode connection, 12 pins. The companion part VM 171AG is red and common anode, so if you are matching an existing driver, check the configuration before you choose the color.
- 5 × 7 displays are almost always multiplexed row by row, so a plain series resistor per segment is not the right model. The 20 mA figure is a static test condition; for scanned operation the datasheet rates peak forward current at 100 mA under 1/10 duty at 1 kHz, which is the number to design the column driver against.
- Dot size is 1.9 mm on a grey surface. Outline is 17.7 × 12.7 mm, so characters tile on a regular pitch when several displays sit side by side.
